A WEYMOUTH man has hit out at vandals who damaged his car whilst he visited his wife in hospital.

Andrew Denning, 44, parked his burgundy Volkswagen Golf in Cambridge Road, a residential area near Dorset County Hospital on Friday from 4pm until 7.30pm.

Upon returning to the car he found that the back window had been smashed. Nothing had been taken from the vehicle.

His wife, Tanya, was in the hospital undergoing an operation which saw a stent put on her kidney as a result of a growing tumour which can’t be removed.

She was diagnosed with breast, lung, kidney, armpit and stomach cancer three and a half weeks ago.

Reacting to the break-in, Andrew said: “How can someone do that?

“They don’t realise what people are going through.”

Andrew said he called 101 as it wasn’t a major emergency.

“As luck would have it however, a police vehicle passed by soon after.”

Andrew caught their attention and informed them about what happened. Officers then began to make house to house enquiries.

He said: “The police seem to think it might have been because there was a football scarf in the back window.

“I’m 44. I’ve always had Sunderland stickers in my car.”

Andrew, a prison custody officer for GEOAmey, said he has never experienced any trouble like it before.

He said: “I don’t think it’s right that someone do that in broad daylight.

“I know it happens because I work in the court service.

“I will have to claim on my car insurance on it and lose nine year’s no claims and watch my insurance go through the roof.”

Andrew said he would have to fix the car over the weekend to allow him to take Tanya for chemotherapy tomorrow.

Tanya successfully fought breast cancer 12 years ago.

Andrew said she will battle it again.

He said: “It’s one of those things. We’ve come to terms with it.

“She’s going to fight it all the way.”

A spokesman for Dorset Police confirmed the matter had been reported and they were aware of the incident.
