A WEYMOUTH care home will be holding a free salon afternoon to raise awareness about dementia.
This Dementia Awareness Week, Highclere House in Weymouth, will be hosting a free salon afternoon for people living with dementia and their carers to reduce stigma around the condition.
The theme of this year’s national campaign run by the Alzheimer’s Society is – don’t bottle it up. So while those living with dementia can enjoy a hair appointment in the home’s spa, it’s hoped that their carers will be able to talk through their worries over a slice of cake and a cup of tea in the cafe.
Home manager Helen Holden said: “We know first-hand the fear that people experience when a loved one is diagnosed with dementia.
“Sometimes we may not know who to turn to and end up bottling up our concerns but this only makes it harder.
“The best way to cope in such a challenging time is to talk with other people going through that too and it’s important that as a community we provide safe and welcoming spaces for people affected by dementia.”
The event will take place on Wednesday, May 21 from 12.30pm to 5.30pm at the home on Cross Road, Weymouth, and is open to the public.
Booking is essential for the free treatments and people should call 01305 233300.
