PORTLAND Coastguard helped search for a missing man in Weymouth and dealt with an on-board engine fire yesterday.

At 11.25 am, Wyke Coastguard Officers and Weymouth RNLI Lifeguards helped Dorset Police in the search for a vulnerable missing man.

The man had gone missing from a seafront hotel in Weymouth, but was found by police further inland in the Weymouth area.

The coastguard also received a Mayday call from a yacht in Poole Harbour reporting an engine fire just before 8am yesterday morning.

The fire was on board the yacht Honolee, and Poole RNLI lifeboat and a nearby yacht, the Phylion, helped evacuate the two crew.

The vessel was then towed to Poole Town Quay, and Dorest Fire and Rescue Service and coastguard rescue officers investigated the fire.

It was found the problem was a blocked cooling intake had led to overheating within the engine, which was dealt with by the fire brigade and coastguards at the scene.

If you allow your yacht's engine to overheat you have not been paying attention. Yachts should be fitted with an engine temperature guage and an intake overheat alarm. Either of which, together with monitoring of the engine's condition would ensure that, in the event of a blockage to the water intake, you do not just motor on untill the engine overheats. You stop clear the blockage and continue - simples!
