CROWDS marked the end of an action-packed bank holiday weekend by celebrating at Weymouth harbourside.

The inaugural Fayre in the Square and the seventh Quayside Music Festival attracted thousands of people to the area on Sunday and Monday.

Taking advantage of the good weather, visitors were provided with live entertainment on both sides of the harbour.

The Fayre in the Square, based primarily around Hope Square, was organised for the first time by the Weymouth Rotary Club.

The event also featured street performances, food stalls and arts and crafts.

It is predicted more than 10,000 people visited the event, with at least 7,000 attending on Sunday.

Dennis Corbett from the club said: “We have had a very good response from the general public.

“We have said we will do the same thing at the same time next year.”

He said whilst there might be minor tweaks, they were committed to hosting a two-day family event.

Mr Corbett added: “We have probably raised a total of £15,000 plus.

“We are looking forward to seeing how we do the same thing but more successful next year.”

The Quayside Music Festival, celebrating its seventh year, saw a number of bands play on an outdoor stage next to the Rendezvous from 12pm to 10pm.

Yesterday’s line-up included the Average Wyke Band, Cuba Libre, Riptide, Mad Hatters and Peacock Suit.

Organiser Keith Treggiden, who is also general manager at Rendezvous, said this festival had been ‘the best one yet’.

He said: “We’ve had over 5,000 people passing through.

“We have had a lot of fresh new acts, one of them being Maybe Neverland.”

“It’s great that both sides of the harbour are having a bit of action on the bank holiday weekend.”

He confirmed the Quayside Music Festival would take place again on July 20 and over the August bank holiday weekend.
