YOUNGSTERS volunteering the South West are being celebrated this National Volunteer Week.
Research from The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award has revealed how much young people contribute to their communities through volunteering, ahead of next week’s UK-wide volunteering week.
In the study of more than 9,500 DofE participants in the South West aged 14 – 24, popular activities included: helping children at schemes such as after-school clubs, donating time to their local charity shops, sports leadership, including basketball scoring and hockey mentoring, and helping people in need such as the elderly or homeless.
Figures from the DofE suggest that the worth of the young volunteers to society is around £24 million a year across the UK, with a further £17 million worth of time dedicated by adult DofE volunteers.
