A RESIDENT has hit out a motorists he claims are treating a Dorchester roundabout as if it does not exist.

Antone Spiroc-tica lives in High Street Fordington with a view over the mini roundabout by the One Stop shop at the junction with Kings Road and said he regularly sees vehicles driving right over the middle of the roundabout.

He said he witnessed the aftermath of one accident at the roundabout recently and the way motorists are treating the junction means it could only be a matter of time before the incident is repeated.

Mr Spiroc-tica said that the recent incident involved a collision between two vehicles and police were called to the scene.

He said shortly afterwards he spent an hour in the morning watching vehicles approaching the mini roundabout and his ‘jaw dropped’ at the driving he witnessed.

Mr Spiroc-tica said: “I happened to rise earlier than usual and was having my morning cup of tea watching the traffic go by.

“Between the hours of 7am and 8am almost every driver was oblivious to the mini roundabout and was simply driving over it as if it was just a bump in the road.

“The highway code, which we all follow as drivers, states that all vehicles must pass round the central markings except large vehicles which are physically incapable of doing so.”

He added: “The longer I watched the lower my jaw dropped, but it may be possible that those whom drove over the mini roundabout are blind to the colour white.”

Dorset County Council said it was ‘not aware of any particular issue’ concerning the roundabout but it urged motorists to use it properly and take other road users into account.

A spokesman for the authority said: “We are not aware of any particular issue with this mini roundabout.

“However, if people do report problems there, our traffic engineering team will look into it.

“We can check whether there is appropriate signage or if the road markings there need to be refreshed.

“Above all, we would urge motorists to use the mini roundabout properly and take other road users into account.”
