COASTGUARDS were called to attend dive charter boat Wight Spirit at 3.15pm yesterday afternoon after a diver showed signs of decompression sickness.
The boat made a Mayday call reporting the 57-year old man was suffering from decompression sickness after a 65 metre dive roughly 35 miles south of the Isle of Wight.
A coastguard helicopter operating at Portland airlifted the diver from the boat to the landing site in Poole where he was met by coastguard rescue officers, a specialist dive doctor and an ambulance.
He was then taken to the nearby hyperbaric recompression chamber for treatment.
