WEYMOUTH’S main street will be alive to the sound of music next weekend.

The annual Street Busk supporting St John Ambulance is all set for Saturday.

Local band Replay will be playing classic hits outside the HSBC in St Mary Street to raise cash for the first aid charity.

Proceeds will go towards projects such as efforts to provide funded training in life-saving skills for children in Dorset’s schools.

Unit manager of St John Ambulance’s Weymouth volunteers Julie Dean said: “Weymouth is very busy with holidaymakers in late June, and next weekend also sees the Annual Veterans Festival so the town is really buzzing – we just need the sunshine.”

The event is the Weymouth volunteers’ main fundraiser for 2014.

Regional fundraising co-ordinator Kevin Dickens is hoping it will be the biggest yet.

He said: “Events like the Street Busk support us in reaching more young people with first aid training. It’s so easy to learn and can have such an incredible impact on people’s lives but, because it’s not compulsory on the national curriculum, only a minority of schoolchildren would know what to do if one of their classmates, or a member of their family became ill or injured.”

He added: “Through fundraising, we can equip a generation with the skills to be the difference between a life lost and a life saved.”
