PORTLAND coastguards helped to rescue a dog that had fallen over a cliff and a stricken yacht.

Just after 10am on Tuesday, Portland Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Weymouth were alerted to the 10-year-old Labrador with a bad leg that had fallen over the cliff at Swanage Down and was unable to get back up.

The Swanage coastguard rescue team were sent and set up their cliff rescue gear, before one team member went down to rescue the dog and bring it back to the cliff top.

The dog was returned to its owners safe and well.

At 4.30pm on Tuesday coastguards received a 999 call reporting a broken down yacht, called Rainbow, in Christchurch Harbour.

Mudeford lifeboat was sent to tow the boat safely back to harbour and coastguard rescue officers met the boat and gave safety advice.
