A GROUP of men have helped revitalise an underused BMX track in Weymouth.

Alan Grubb, Justin Hunt, Kane Garner, Rob Thomas and Dave Thomas worked on the site near Hillbourne Road in Wyke Regis last week (Friday June 20).

After receiving permission from Weymouth and Portland Borough Council, brothers Rob and Dave got to work with a digger, donated by Perryfields, to form a new track.

The others, meanwhile, helped clear up the rest of the site.

Alan said: “I lived up there for years. We are not into BMX but we are all into remote control cars. We thought we could make up a little track. We went up there one day with the cars on the grass and it went on from there.

“We have got general support from neighbours.”

Alan said he’d like the site to become available for as many people as possible. He said: “We would like to look at it like that. The BMX people don’t get on it in the winter. Generally over the last few years it got to a point where they couldn’t really use it.”

The Mayor of Weymouth and Portland, Kate Wheller, said she had received a number of requests to develop the area.

Cllr Wheller, who represents the Wyke Regis ward, said: “I contacted a charity called Groundwork who have been doing some plans and some initial research for me on the best way of renovating the site.

“They needed funds more than we had.”

“Alan said he would do some temporary work to get it back in use in the immediate future. Groundwork is continuing to try and access more funds for us.”

Cllr Wheller said the skate park at the end of Portland Beach Road – whilst ‘terrific’ – was a long way for young people in Wyke Regis to go to.
