OFFICERS in Bridport are appealing for witnesses after a theft of a large number of chickens occurred in a village near to the town.

Thieves stole approximately 150 chickens in two separate incidents from Strong Orchard on Pineapple Lane in Salwayash, where they are allowed to roam free to help fertilise the land.

The first incident took place on Tuesday 17 June 2014 when offenders stole around 100 ‘Silver Link’ chickens.

The second incident occurred overnight between midnight and 9am on Wednesday 25 June 2014 when a further 50 chickens of various breeds were taken.

Police Constable Neil Gauden, of Bridport police, said: “This is a significant and targeted theft of a large amount of livestock that has caused considerable expense and inconvenience to the victim.

“It is possible that the thieves have tried to sell the birds locally for an unusually low price or they have may have tried to take them to an abattoir.

“I urge anyone who has been approached by someone selling chickens in unusual circumstances or has concerns about suspicious behaviour to contact the police.

“Anyone with information that can help the investigation is asked to come forward as soon as possible.”
