IT WAS full steam ahead as huge crowds flocked to a summer show near Weymouth at the weekend.

Organisers of the two-day Chickerell Steam and Vintage Show held at Moor Farm, Knights in the Bottom, said it was the best year ever.

Families enjoyed displays of steam engines, vintage bikes and scooters, old fire engines and military vehicles.

This year saw a host of new events including live graffiti art demonstrations, chainsaw wood-carving and a demonstration of lawn-mower racing.

Young and old enjoyed live music and entertainment on the stage from the likes of Frantic Atlantic and Jolly Boys Outing.

There was a craft tent featuring jams and preserves, photography and handmade soaps.

Crowds were entertained by the antics of Portsmouth Wild West Association in their own ‘Wild West town.’ The Amberlights majorettes got the crowds dancing along to their routines on Sunday afternoon.

Andy Spracklen, show co-ordinator, thanked the volunteers and everyone that turned out to support them, all the businesses in Chickerell for their sponsorship and support and landowners the Vine and Hollins families.

He said: “It’s a record year. People have come along and supported us really well. We have had a lot of new attractions this year.”

Mr Spracklen said the event had more of a village show feel this year, he said the highlight of the show had been the support and turn-out they had.

He said: “We only have a small band of volunteers and they have been working all week.

“Everyone’s had a great time.”

Frank Edmonds and his uncle Nick Edmonds had come from Cheshire to visit relatives.

Frank said he had enjoyed it. He said: “Everyone’s very friendly and the weather’s cracking.”

He added that the highlight for him was the old Bedford wagons on display.
