PORTLAND tourists will now be able to get some top tips on attractions and beauty spots thanks to a new visitor information centre.

A new centre giving advice and information to visitors will be up and running at the Heights Hotel from Thursday, July 17.

The previous centre, situated at Portland Bill, was closed in September last year, due to Weymouth and Portland Borough Council deciding that they were not able to fund the operational cost of the service.

The team at the Heights said they recognised the need to provide a service and help to increase tourism to the Isle.

Information project assistant Mike Deadman said: “Portland is a fantastic place to visit.

“Whether you’re looking for the best views around, or somewhere to go, people like to know what there is to see and do.

“Portland is on a road to nowhere, so it’s even more important than ever for us to encourage visitors and keep them here for as long as possible, so that they spend their money with local businesses on the island.” He added: “Visitors will be able to find out what’s happening on Portland, and get all the information they need in one place.

“What’s more, local businesses will be welcome to work with the information centre, to promote their business via available advertising opportunities.”

The new centre will provide information on local attractions as well as forthcoming Portland events, public transport, maps and gifts.

The new centre is working closely with the Portland Community Partnership to deliver the service.

The centre will officially be opened on Thursday July 17 at 11am.
