ORGANISERS are thrilled with the success of a mini music festival near Weymouth.

Not only did the third Chesil Rocks event provide a great afternoon and evening for the hundreds that enjoyed the music, it raised £9,200 for Samaritans of Dorset. A cheque was presented to the Weymouth-based organisation by the committee.

The funds raised were well over last year’s total of £5,400.

Tim and Hilary Warren once again invited revellers onto their land at Higher Farm House, Langton Herring and like last year, the 500-capacity event sold out.

Mr Warren said: “The event, aimed at music lovers whatever their taste, featured a wide array of quality music including concert pianist Duncan Honey-bourne, alternative ska band Imperial Leisure, the Leggomen and Pink Floyd tribute band The Great Gig in the Sky.

“There were many activities for children including face painting and fossil painting, a den and pay area, storytellers and a treasure hunt.

“The weather remained kind with a good deal of sunshine and just a few drops of rain to cater for the vagaries of the English summer.”

The recipe of a countryside setting overlooking Chesil Beach, a family atmosphere and live music has helped to establish Chesil Rocks as a popular summer gathering.

The idea for it came after a garden party the Warrens held when it was suggested their home would make a good venue for an outdoor music event. Mr and Mrs Warren organise it, supported by a committee.

Mr Warren said he was ‘overwhelmed’ with the amount of money raised this year.

He added to the total himself by agreeing to have his face painted following a suggestion by a young boy in the crowd who was raising money by selling cupcakes.

Mr Warren added: “We are extremely grateful to our other committee members and to all our volunteer helpers from Langton Herring and new helpers from Portesham, their village hall and Scout group.

“We are also greatly indebted to our many sponsors.

“A special mention to farmer Robert Mayo for allowing those attending to park on his land and to the residents of Langton Herring for tolerating the event for the third year.”

Mr and Mrs Warren confirmed Chesil Rocks will be held again next year and they would like to hear from anyone who may be able to help with sponsorship, either financial or providing services in kind. They are also interested in hearing from musicians who might be interested in playing at the event.
