PORTLAND Coastguards helped rescue an unconscious woman, a lost man and an injured dog yesterday on a busy day for the service.

At 10.55am, Portland Coastguard received a report of a box washed up on Swanage Beach marked as property of the RAF.

Officers from Swanage Coastguard Rescue Team investigated and the item was found to be the partial remains of a box belonging to the RAF, and it was quickly removed from the area.

At 1.27pm, Portland Coastguards assisted the Sidmouth Independent Inshore Rescue boat in rescuing a broken down boat.

The boat, a 1.7 metre Seago RHIB with two people on board, was one nautical mile off Salcombe Mouth.

Coastguards arrived at the scene quickly and towed the vessel to Sidmouth beach.

At 2.04pm, coastguards assisted Exmouth Coastguard Rescue Officers after a dog reportedly fell off a cliff.

The incident happened at Orcombe Point and the dog, a lurcher, was recovered by a canoe from Exmouth Beach Rescue Club and reunited with its owner.

The dog was then rushed to a local veterinary surgery with a suspected broken leg.

Shortly after 2pm, Swanage Coastguards requested an ambulance to a woman in her 40s who had collapsed and was unconscious at Shore Road.

Before Coastguard co-ordinators alerted the ambulance service, confirmation came that a paramedic had arrived on scene. No further assistance required.

At 2.17pm, Lyme Regis RNLI Inshore Lifeboat self launched after receiving a report from a local vessel that they had suffered engine failure one mile south of Lyme Regis Beach.

Once located, the RNLI lifeboat towed the vessel safely back to Lyme Regis.

Shortly before 3pm, Swanage Coastguard Rescue Officers were tasked to assist a man stuck in mud at Littlesea, Studland.

The man had freed himself but was unable to find his way out of the area. Coastguards and police were close to his location but unable to find him in the heavily wooded area so the Coastguard Helicopter was launched to find him.

The coastguards continued to keep in touch with the man over the phone as the helicopter searched for him, and after the helicopter found him, they airlifted him to a nearby the helicopter coastguard vehicle where he was found to be fit and well.

At 3.05pm, the Portland Coastguard Rescue Helicopter was tasked to the assistance of a 58-year-old diver suffering from symptoms of decompression sickness aboard the dive boat RW2 in Weymouth Bay.

The man was airlifted to Poole, where the helicopter was met by Poole Coastguard Rescue Officers and the man was transferred to the nearby hyperbaric recompression chamber by the South West Ambulance Service.

Shortly after 6pm, the angling vessel Wendy broadcast a PanPan urgency call on VHF Channel 16 after suffering engine failure in Poole Harbour.

The Harbour Launch Vigilant went to the boat’s assistance and took the vessel in tow back to its mooring at Rockley.
