PORTLAND Castle offers a historic adventure for all the family.

Overlooking Portland Harbour, Portland Castle is one of Henry VIII’s finest coastal forts.

The castle was once part of a series of 16th century defensive buildings, called Device Forts, which ran from Kent to Cornwall built in the early 1540s to protect against French and Spanish invasion.

Today it provides a great day out for visitors and its audio tour, included in the admission price, tells of the castle’s 450 year history and the part it played in the First and Second World Wars.

Portland Castle offers lots to do, and situated only four miles from Weymouth, this historic adventure can easily be combined with some more contemporary seaside fun.

Guests can enjoy stunning sea views and get close to the powerful cannons. They can also wander around the Contemporary Heritage Garden before relaxing in the Captain’s Tearoom, which serves cakes, sandwiches and snacks.

The Governor’s Garden contains an impressive circular amphitheatre made from local Portland stone, a perfectly sheltered spot to enjoy the dramatic sea and harbour views.

Tickets cost £4.90 for adults and £2.90 for children.

Located on Liberty Road in Castletown, it is open daily from 10am – 6pm. For information call 01305 820539
