Officers were called to an address in St Leonard’s Road, Chapelhay at 3.20pm yesterday, where the body of a 43-year-old man was found.

Speaking to the Echo at the scene, Inspector Geoff Hicks of Dorset Police said the death was being treated as suspicious.

Insp Hicks said: “We do not know very much at the moment, we are investigating the death of a man and as a precaution we are treating it as suspicious.

“The house will be cordoned off and there will be a police guard all night and possibly into tomorrow morning as we continue with our inquiries.”

A police statement said: ‘At 3.20pm Dorset Police received a report of a sudden death of a man at an address on St Leonard’s Road in Weymouth.

‘At this time, the death is unexplained and officers from CID and scenes of crime are investigating.’ Forensic examiners in white suits could be seen carrying boxes from the property.

A police cordon was put up outside as shocked residents of the road looked on.

Insp Hicks said the death happened in the first-floor flat of the property.

Neighbours spoke of their shock at the incident, describing it as ‘horrible.’ One, who did not want to be named, said: “We don’t know what’s gone on, we just heard the sirens and looked out and saw the police cars.”

Another witness who saw the commotion said: “There were loads of flashing lights and then I saw the police were in St Leonard’s Road. It looks serious.”

Officers carried out inquiries in the street and spoke to neighbours.

When crime scene investigators left the scene, more detectives arrived.

Police remain at the house this morning.
