A CELEBRATION of Portland will culminate in a firework extravaganza this Sunday.
The Spirit of Portland Festival kicked off last Saturday with dozens of people turning out to the events at Portland Marina. There were lots of community stalls, displays of stone carving and all sorts of activities.
The isle was bathed in sunshine and lots of people turned out to the 'Celebration of the Sea.'
And there was lots to see and do at the Bid Wild Chesil event hosted by Dorset Wildlife Trust at the Chesil Beach Centre.
Events have been running throughout the week and range from a teddy bear's picnic to family history to a First World One-themed cream tea.
Today (fri) the cream tea and quiz will take place at Muntsy's Con Club Jubilee Hall from 2-3.30pm, or if you like your activities more Jurassic Coast themed- why not get involved in building a giant Legosaurus at a workshop at Portland Museum from 10am-3pm.
The finale will be on Sunday throughout the day at Portland Marina, which will play host to a variety of community and craft stalls, music, a hog roast, barbeque and a display of Porsche cars.
Rachel Barton from Portland Community Partnership said that everyone had a really good time and the launch event and urged people to get involved in the final weekend's events.
She said: “We were very pleased with the launch event. There was a steady flow of people- obviously the weather helped. The stall holders were pleased with the response they got.”
She urged people to get involved in the remaining events.
She said: “Obviously the more engagement we get this year, the more likely Spirit will be able to grow year on year.”
The finale on Sunday will see all sorts of food, music and stalls, before the fireworks close the event.
Mrs Barton said: “There will be a variety of stalls, both community and craft stalls. There will be music during the afternoon and people can try gig rowing in the harbour.
“It should be quite busy down there. It will be great fun.”
