TRADITION: James Louch and CPO (SCC) Damien Hawkins piped and bugled at the 44th annual Rum Tot Day ceremony
LEADING Cadet James Louch and CPO (SSC) Damien Hawkins piped and bugled at the traditional Rum Tot Day ceremony at the Corner House Inn on Portland.
The annual event is in its 44th year and marks the occasion when the daily tot of rum was stopped in the Royal Navy in 1970.
Veterans gathered at the pub to re-enact the ceremony and ‘Splice the Mainbrace’ – a naval term for issuing a drink.
The ceremony started at 3pm with CPO Hawkins sounding the ‘Grog Call’ on the bugle.
That was followed by a short historical introduction to the ceremony.
Leading Cadet Louch then piped ‘Up-sprits’, a traditional Bosun’s call, as a measure of rum was decanted and served to each of those present.
