A MAN was airlifted to hospital after collapsing on Portland.

South Western Ambulance said they recieved a call about the man, who had diabetes, at 5.01pm on Sunday night and by 5.08pm a rapid responce vehicle was on scene.

The coastguard helicopter was called to assist the casualty and airlifted him to hopsital.

A witness told the Echo: “The helicopter hovered over and a crew member came off and disappeared behind the rocks at West Weares and the helicopter remained hovering for about 15 minutes.

“The crewman came back and was carrying someone. They were winched up and the helicopter flew off, I imagine to the hospital.”

Portland Coastguard confirmed a rescue had taken place and a man had been taken to hospital.

A spokesman from the ambulance service said the man was diabetic and had collapsed with low blood sugar. He was taken to hospital by helicopter for treatment.
