Have your say on future of Weymouth

POP-UP events are to be held across Weymouth in a bid to engage residents in the creation of a ‘masterplan.’

As reported in the Echo, Weymouth and Portland Borough Council announced last month it would be developing a strategy to ensure a bright future for the town.

The ‘vision’ is to create a ‘thriving town centre’ and the authority will be canvassing local opinion to see what the masterplan should include.

Initial events will be held during Thursday and Friday on the Esplanade near to the King’s statute.

There will also be events on August 26 and 27 outside Debenhams in New Bond Street.

Cllr Ray Nowak, briefholder for Economic Regeneration, said: “I would really encourage people to come along, have a chat to our officers and provide your extremely valuable feedback.

“Community involvement is at the heart of the masterplan and we are really keen to hear from everybody.”

It is hoped the strategy will be in place by early 2015.

Wasn't the Olympics a Master Plan and look at the mess that was. Why ask for the opinions of local people when no notice is ever taken?

I think most people would want to see the grotty council offices, law courts and the home for ex offenders knocked down and replaced with something decent! Our harbour is a brilliant area spoilt by these eyesores. Some of the best views to be had in the town centre are enjoyed by these buildings. But, as said by others above......nothing will happen!

Like most "consultations" I think the people of Weymouth will find that any decisions have already been made. Feedback will probably be filed in the bin.

There's already a reasonable plan; it's not being delivered; they're going to create a new plan; it'll be similar to the old plan... and this is where delivery of a plan, any of the plans, would break the cycle of only talking about stuff and begin to meet expectations.

A good starting point is to attract an international event to Weymouth, such as an international sandcastle building competition. Such an event would focus the eyes of the whole world on Weymouth (and Portland). Even better, it would ensure worldwide TV coverage. The inward investment will be phenomenal with international companies crawling over each other to get a piece of the action. Visitors from the four corners of the globe will come and report on the attractions of the Jurassic coast and then more people and businesses will come and before long Weymouth (and Portland) will become an international resort with a booming economy.
I remember, not long ago, a minor event called the Olympics came to the area. the council invested heavily to ensure such a successful scenario. We are tld we have a wonderful legacy. I have often wondered where this is (apart from the superb traffic system bought for a mere £16M). This present article (or appeal) confirms my thoughts on this wonderful legacy.
