PORTLAND Coastguard launched a search after reports from Devon Police of a person potentially cut off by the tide.

A call was received by the headquarters at 10.41pm last night from the police after a member of public reported a flashing light had been sighted on the shoreline west of Seaton.

There was concern it may have been a person cut off by exceptionally high tide, and Sidmouth Lifeboat and Beer Coastguard officers were tasked to search the area.

Eventually, a local fisherman was located who confirmed that he had been using a light in the area and the search was stood down.
