VISITORS to a country fete in Purbeck should let the train take the strain.

Harman’s Cross Country fete, flower show and gymkhana is at the village hall, next to the railway station. It will take place on Monday, August 25, from noon-4pm.

Proceeds from the annual community event, known as the Harman's Cross Field Day, go towards the maintenance of the Harman’s Cross village hall, which is run by a registered charity and was rebuilt during 2009 and 2010.

The horseshow and gymkhana part of the event takes place on the opposite side of the Swanage Railway’s Harman’s Cross station and begins at 9am. Visitors who travel by steam train from Norden Park & Ride, Corfe Castle, Herston Halt or Swanage – and present a valid rail ticket – pay 50p for an entry ticket instead of £1.

Swanage Railway general manager Richard Jones said: “Travelling by steam train to the Harman's Cross Field Day is the perfect way to reach the typical English country summer fete because our railway station at Harman’s Cross is next to the event in the grounds of the village hall.”

This year’s fete features the Wessex Military Band, a flower and vegetable show, craft marquee and a raffle.
