THOUSANDS of people descended on Weymouth for the happiest day of the year.

There were fireworks, dancing, sandcastles and the famous Red Arrows display at Weymouth Carnival 2014.
And there was lots of glamour, as Emma Whitbread was crowned Carnival Queen. She said: “It was really exciting to go out and be officially crowned. I can't wait to do all of the charity work and help local businesses. Town centre car parks were jam-packed and the Mount Pleasant Park and Ride was busier than ever as families came in their droves for carnival day.”

Visitors took the party from day to night, lining the streets in their thousands for the carnival procession. There were all kinds of creatures on floats adorned with sparkle, ribbon and paper mache. Families came from far afield to join in the fun.

The Wilson family, from Surrey, got stuck in to the sandcastle competition. Emma Wilson, 10, said: "We've made a racing car and have collected lots of shells and built it in an hour."

Her mum Claire, said: “It's been a great day so far. We're looking forward to the Red Arrows later.”
And they were something to look forward to- onlookers gasped as the aircraft zoomed across the sky, leaving colourful trails in their wake. Eyes were also on the skies for the Great War display earlier in the afternoon.

And people packed in to Weymouth Pavilion for BBC’s World War One at Home event.

Organiser Mark Hurrell said: “It's a subject I think is very important we remind people of. We've had more than 70,000 people at similar events."
Peckish revellers got a taste of the sea at the carnival’s food village and they packed on to the beach for another fantastic firework display.

Adam Kershaw, eight, from Manchester, said: “It’s been one of the best days of the year.”

The Echo would like to thank Enzo on the Esplanade, residents and Sheila Whatley and Dave and Genny Burchill for allowing us to film our carnival procession video from the balcony.
