COUNCIL Tax payers in Purbeck, West Dorset and Weymouth and Portland who receive a 25 per cent reduction on their bill because they are single occupancy residents are being checked to make sure that the reductions are correct.

These checks form part of the council’s measures to crackdown on fraud.

Capita Local Government Services has been appointed to carry out a comprehensive review and is writing to council tax payers who receive the single occupancy reduction.

It is working with Equifax, the credit reference agency using up-to-the-minute, data-matching technology which helps to identify where people are claiming discounts that they are not entitled to.

The review will continue until November 2014 and any taxpayers currently receiving a discount which they feel may not be correct are urged to contact their local council’s Revenues and Benefits Team.

Residents who have received a letter and who may have any questions about the review can call 0345 302 2311.
