Sixteen-year-old student Elle Goodall will head to Borneo for a month next summer to help local communities and wildlife conservation efforts.

She will join other in participating with the Camps International expedition, where they will work with local communities to better their lives, not to mention throw in a bit of adventure too.

The Camps International expeditions have been operating since 2002 across 25 different locations in Africa and Asia. They have up to 100 different projects running at any one time and say that 25,000 people in developing countries have benefited from the work of their volunteers.

“We don’t exactly know what our project will be yet but previous student groups have worked on many different projects including planting trees and crops, helping dig foundations for a new school, and teaching the local children songs and games,” said Elle.

“We will also be undertaking a five-day jungle trek, and will be learning how to scuba dive. Raising money is part of the expedition process, not just to having the experience of a lifetime but also helping to make a positive difference to the communities that we will be working in.”

Elle, a Beaminster and John Colfox School pupil, added that to raise the funds required she has been working as a seasonal host at the Sea Life Adventure Park in Weymouth, but that with the season almost over she has decided to plan a fundraising event of her own.

“My next fundraising idea is to invite people to come swishing. Swishing is a fun get-together to swap pre-loved clothes. It saves money and by re-using old clothes we are saving the planet too,” she said.

Elle’s swishing event will be held on October 1 at The Pavilion, Bridport Leisure Centre. Tickets are £5 which includes snacks and a glass of wine or soft drink, and entry to a raffle draw.

Tickets are available from Beaminster School reception, Bridport Tourist Information Centre.
