COUNCILLORS have backed plans for a permanent multi-agency response unit.

Dorset County Council’s cabinet has approved plans for a Civil Contingencies Unit (CCU), which will see emergency services and councils across the county working together to improve emergency planning.

The annual cost of the CCU to the county council will be £40,000 and the unit will be based at Dorset Police headquarters in Winfrith.

Cabinet member for families and children’s safeguarding Cllr Rebecca Knox, who is also chairman of the Dorset Fire Authority, said the unit’s work will build on efforts Dorset Fire and Rescue Service has been making to improve community resilience.

She said: “The plans are to get much closer to the community and really make sure emergency arrangements really are taken into account.

“It does fit in really well with where the fire service is going. I’m delighted with the progress that has been made.”
