THERE’S still time to get walking and help raise children’s fitness levels.

October is International Walk to School Month and Dorset County Council is urging parents to use their feet for the school run.

More than 40 per cent of Dorset children already walk to school, but a large number still travel by car.

Dorset County Council cabinet member for environment and the economy, Peter Finney said: “Walking, cycling or scooting to school are all good ways for children to learn about road safety and lead fitter and healthier lives.

“We’re encouraging all pupils, parents and teaching staff to get involved this October and celebrate International Walk to School Month – whatever the weather.”

Schools in Weymouth, Portland and Dorchester are getting into the spirit this month with a ‘walk once a week’ challenge.

Head of school at Wyke Regis Infants and Nursery, Jackie Sonner, said: “Walking is a great way to get from A to B, and a brilliant way for children to fit exercise into their day. We know that children who walk to school arrive more ready to learn and settle down to lessons quicker than those who travel by car.”
