A DORSET fundraiser took in one of the world’s most famous landmarks on his latest charity trek.

Gareth Bishop took on the Inca Trail to the world famous ruins of Machu Picchu to raise funds for Greyhound Rescue West of England.

His South American adventure raised £700 for the charity and comes a year after he raised more than £1,400 for the same cause through an ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Gareth is used to tough charity challenges but said his latest effort was particularly gruelling.

The second day of the trek involved walking for 11 hours with two major climbs of 4,500m and 4,300m.

However, his efforts were rewarded with the sight of Machu Picchu.

He said: “Despite the amazing scenery along the trek, I found this challenge both physically and really mentally tough.

“When the going got tough and I began to struggle, I just had to stay focused and remember why I was doing the trek.

“Knowing that every step I was taking was helping Greyhound Rescue West of England really spurred me on, as did the thought that I was repaying the faith of everyone who had sponsored me.”

Gareth, who lives in Blandford, will not be resting on his laurels and is already planning another trek through the rainforests of Costa Rica next year to raise further funds for the dog charity.
