A NEW exhibition has been launched at Bovington Tank Museum tying in with Brad Pitt’s new film ‘Fury’.

Nearly 150 people gathered at the opening of the ‘Fury’ exhibition on Monday, which was attended by special guest Murray Walker.

The exhibition tells the story of the museum’s involvement with the making of the film. Two of the museum’s exhibits, the Tiger 131 tank and the Fury Sherman M4 tank, both star in it.

The film is set during the last month of the Second World War in April 1945. As the Allies make their final push in Europe, Wardaddy, played by Pitt, commands a M4A3E8 Sherman tank called 'Fury' and its five-man crew on a deadly mission behind enemy lines.

David Willey, curator of Bovington Tank Museum, said: “We were first involved in the film in some way back in the spring of 2013.

“It led to some very interesting conversations.

“We thought it was worth our while being involved because it would bring people to the story we tell here.”

Murray Walker, whilst well known for his work as a Formula One commentator, also served as a captain during the Second World War and operated a Sherman tank.

He said: “We were up against some pretty tough opposition. The German Army had some extremely good tanks. Frankly at the time they were better than our tanks but we had lots of Shermans.

“As a result of that and the fact they were so reliable we came out on top.”

Mr Walker said he was looking forward to seeing the film for the first time. He said: “I know that the film producers went to an enormous amount of trouble to make sure everything was as accurate as it could be.”

The exhibition, which is scheduled to run until the end of 2015, features the Sherman M4, as well as imagery and footage directly from the film.

Other features include costumes from the film worn by some of the stars and props from the set.

Brian Frost and Ian ‘Buzz’ Aldridge, workshop technicians at the museum, helped the film crew learn how to operate the tanks during filming.

Mr Frost said: “Our role was basically to supervise and advise the crew how to be a crew in the tank.

“I would say they were a very effective combat crew that would have been competent.”

Both men attended the European premiere of Fury at the BFI London Film Festival on Sunday. Pitt paid tribute to both men before the film got underway.

Mr Frost said: “I was quite surprised he mentioned us. It was really appreciated. It was quite an honour.”
