FIRE crews from Weymouth and Portland battled a blaze in a warehouse on Portland.

Dorset Fire and Rescue Service were alerted last night to smoke coming out of a building on a site where Hump An' Dump is based, next to Victoria Square.

Four fire engines, an unmarked car and a fire investigator's car attended the scene at around 7pm.

Lerret Road was cordoned off and police road signs, flashing lights and cones were placed around the roundabout.

Station Manager at Poundbury HQ, Russ True, said: “We received a report of smoke issuing from the property. Ten crews from Portland and Weymouth initially attended, and they asked for assistance shortly afterwards and four appliances attended.

“There was a fire contained within the rear of the building and smoke throughout the rest of the property."

The fire was extinguished using four breathing apparatus and three main lines, and was under control just before 8pm.

A spokeswoman for Dorset Fire and Rescue service confirmed the source of the fire was an electrical fault in a compressor.

The compressor was destroyed by the fire whilst contents of the skips within the premises received some fire damage.

Lisa Baillie, 27, from Weymouth, was visiting the fun fair with her son, which is across the road from the trading site, when the fire broke out.

She said: "We didn't know what was going on really, we were in the funfair and we just saw the fire engines. When we came outside we saw smoke coming out from the side of the building. There wasn't really much smoke, not much to see.”
