Firefighters and staff from Dorset County Council are celebrating after receiving a recognition of excellence award.

They were among six winners in the Excellence in Fire & Emergency Awards 2014, which highlights innovative working practices, initiatives, partnerships and technology in the fire and emergency services. The Safe And Independent Living (SAIL) project was highly commended in the ceremony held at the Caledonian Club, in Belgravia, London last Friday.

They beat competition from Bucks & MK FRS and South Central Ambulance Service, Bedfordshire FRS and Faith Football, which were also nominated in the partnership category.

SAIL is a Dorsetwide partnership between local authorities comprising Dorset Fire and Rescue Service, Dorset Police, Dorset Energy Advice Service Centre, Age UK and the National Health Service. It was founded in April 2010 to offer Dorset residents specialised services and information to help ensure they feel safe in their own homes. If you recognise someone might need support, please complete a referral form, available from dorsetfire.gov.uk/working-with-us/partnerships/formal-partnerships/sail After referral residents will receive a free home safety check and installation of smoke detectors among other benefits. There are now over 70 referral partners.

Sue Warr, manager of the Dorset Partnership for Older People Programme (POPP) said: “The SAIL form is an invaluable tool which facilitates that practical support is provided and aims to prevent isolation, a common feeling experienced among the elderly. “In many instances it is these simple wellbeing measures that stop people’s health deteriorating and subsequently requiring more astute services.” Chief fire officer, Darran Gunter, who accepted the award, said: “I am delighted to receive this award on behalf of all organisations that participate in SAIL. “The scheme is a great example of innovation from my officers and Dorset County Council staff. “In the last year alone, over 1,500 referral forms have been completed which has resulted in over 4,000 actions or support being given. “I am immensely proud of the scheme and the key role it has played in keeping Dorset’s communities safe.”
