A LORRY became stuck and damaged vehicles in a Dorchester road that has been beset by parking problems.

The vehicle became wedged between cars parked on both sides of Wessex Road at around midday today.

It has damaged at least four cars and was stuck for over an hour-and-a-half while the owners of the cars parked along the road were contacted and moved their vehicles.

Residents of Wessex Road have long been campaigning for restrictions to be introduced in the street, which is regularly packed with cars they say mainly belong to workers from the nearby Dorset County Hospital.

Nikki Horscroft was visiting friends in the road from Sussex and was one of the unlucky motorists to have their cars damaged.

She said: “His tyre has scraped the whole side of my car and the police had to bump it to get it off.”

Nikki was busy contacting her insurers and said the hassle was something she could do without while she was supposed to be on holiday.

She added that she has witnessed the problems in Wessex Road before and asked what would happen if it was a fire engine that got stuck there.

Nikki said: “If that was a fire truck it couldn’t get through.

“I told the council and they said if it was a fire truck they would move all the cars down the road but how would they do that?”

While the lorry was stuck another heavy goods vehicle came up the road and had to turn round.

Residents of Wessex Road have been before Dorchester Town Council to call for restrictions to be introduced on several occasions but so far nothing has been done.

One resident, who did not wish to be named, said: “This has just been waiting to happen.”

The driver of the lorry, which belongs to Pulham Steels, did not wish to comment.
