A WEYMOUTH clergyman said he was left horrified after a church was left the victim of criminal damage for the second time this year.

Police are appealing for witnesses after offenders broke the glass doors to the noticeboard in the porch of All Saints Church in Wyke Regis.

The Rev Roger Butcher, assistant curate, said: “We are trying to find out who it was. We are going to have to trail through our CCTV.

“I think we are quite shocked and horrified. Why do people do these sorts of things? A lot of the parishioners and the wider community who use the church find it quite senseless.”

The Echo previously reported how yobs targeted the church back in January, throwing bricks at great force at the East Window.

Irreplaceable stained glass was damaged with three holes being made.

The East Window, behind the altar, dates back from Victorian times and contains detailed biblical illustrations and an inscription. The church is still paying for the cost of repairing the window, which at the time was expected to be several thousand pounds.

Mr Butcher said he and others just couldn’t understand why someone would cause more damage to the church.

He said: “People seem to want to vent their frustrations in various ways and we seem to be on the end of it.

“If anybody knows anything, if they could come forward, that would be really good.

“We won’t use glass in there next time. We will replace it with some Perspex sheeting. It’s a wooden framed notice board. If you put glass in it again then most likely it will happen again.

“The church spends a lot of money trying to stop damage that occurs. Our insurance for the church is over £6,000 a year.

“It has a real serious effect every time we are on the receiving end of criminal damage.”

The incident happened between 3pm on Monday, November 10 and 8.20am on Tuesday, November 11.
