HOUSING on Portland has been given a special local award.

Borough Mayor Kate Wheller attended the annual Weymouth Civic Society Annual Awards evening, which saw MJC Builders scoop the top prize for two flats and three houses at Easton Square.

A special award was given to 'Waypoints' on the Wild about Weymouth and Portland's Legacy Trail. These are located at important viewpoints or landscape features on this new walking route from Littlemoor-Lorton to Portland Bill.

They are in the form of dry stone-walling features, all in Portland stone. Fine sculptures of local wildlife are cleverly incorporated into the stonework, while interpretation panels inform visitors about the local natural environment.

A certificate of merit was handed to The Joinery at Pebble Lane, Chiswell and to New Cottage at Upwey Mill.

The awards aim to celebrate the best new developments, or upgrades, which have enhanced the borough.
