MORE than 300 shoeboxes full of gifts will be sent to children in poverty in eastern Europe.

Residents of Weymouth and Portland have once again taken part in Operation Christmas Child, organised by Samaritan’s Purse.

Boxes were collected between September and November. St John’s Portland Badgers were just one of the many groups to take part.

Gill Greenwood, speaking on behalf of Portland Methodist Church, said: “Over 350 completed shoe boxes will be going to Eastern Europe, kindly filled by individuals, families, care homes, youth groups and schools in Weymouth and Portland.

“I want to say a big thank you to the many people who knitted hats, scarves and gloves.

“I was overwhelmed by their generosity.

“Thank you to the local churches and businesses who displayed the posters and leaflets.”

The 2014 campaign is now closed. However, you can still send a shoebox gift through the online campaign, Shoebox World.
