BRIGHT sparks are facing the future after completing a course.

Dorset Fire and Rescue Service watched seven young people pass out after successfully completing a course based on the Safer People and Responsible Communities (SPARC+) programme, working in partnership with Jobcentre Plus.

The course, based at Dorchester fire station, allowed the seven young people, aged between 18 and 24, to learn basic firefighting skills, participate in team building activities and gain transferable skills for the workplace.

The passing out parade was attended by the Lord Lieutenant of Dorset Angus Campbell, Jennifer Coombs on behalf on the High Sheriff, Mayor of Bridport Cllr Maggie Ray, Cllr Martin Ray, Cllr Ann Stribley, Cllr Ron Coatsworth and Jeremy Pope.

Education Officer for Dorset Fire and Rescue Service Rosemary Locock, said: “The seven day course has allowed these young people to improve their skills and raise their self-esteem.”

The programme, which is AQA accredited, is specifically designed to provide challenges to enhance communication skills, encourage teamwork and raise achievement levels and self-discipline in a controlled environment.

The participants gained valuable qualifications that they can use in the workplace. These include First Aid and an Award for Personal Licence Holders, which enables them to sell alcohol in licensed premises.

Mrs Locock added: “The project is delivered by specially trained firefighters who encourage the young people to practice search and rescue techniques and assist in the recovery of a casualty from a smoke-filled building. The aim is to take the young person outside their comfort zone and boost their self-belief through achievement.”

Andy Cullen, of Jobcentre Plus in Dorset, said: “We’re glad to have worked with Dorset Fire and Rescue Service to give young jobseekers the opportunity to be part of such an innovative programme. It will stand them in good stead as they promote themselves in the jobs market.”
