SPONSOR the borough mayor and help raise funds for local charities, Weymouth and Portland residents are being urged.

Mayor Kate Wheller is attending as many carol services as possible over the festive period.

Every penny raised goes in to the Mayor’s Christmas Fund – managed by the Weymouth and Portland Lions Club – which supports charities such as the Weymouth and Portland food banks, Soul Food and the Dorset Echo’s Christmas Toy Appeal.

Cllr Wheller said: “I would like to thank all those who have donated so far to some very worthy causes.

“Community spirit is so strong in the borough and there is still an opportunity to give to the fund over the next week or so.”

Last year the appeal raised a total of £1,669.87.

The public can also take part in a charity raffle to raise money for The Friendship Club, a local charity which organises social events for people with learning difficulties, and Cllr Wheller’s chosen charity for the year.

The prize on offer is a bottle of House of Commons 10-year-old single malt whisky.

Those who would like to take part can purchase tickets, for £1 a square, from North Quay reception.

Donations can be sent to the Mayor’s Christmas Fund Appeal, Council Offices, North Quay, Weymouth, DT4 8TA or they can be dropped in at the reception desk where appeal envelopes are available.
