PEOPLE power has paid off and a critically-acclaimed movie by a Dorset filmmaker will be shown in Weymouth.

Independent movie Kajaki: The True Story, described by Jeremy Clarkson as ‘the best war film ever made’, is to get three charity screenings at Weymouth Cineworld after originally being on release only at Vue cinemas.

Gareth Unwin, who studied at Weymouth College, was executive producer of the movie.

He will take part in a question and answer session following the film being shown at the Weymouth cinema on Sunday, January 18 at 4pm.

Kajaki has already generated awards buzz and glowing reviews.

It tells the true story of British troops in Afghanistan and is based on the story of Mark Wright, who helped save the lives of injured soldiers in Helmand Province.

Set in 2006, it tells the story of a small group of soldiers on a routine patrol in Helmand who become trapped in a mine-laden riverbed.

The film raised money for Help 4 Heroes, the Royal British Legion and Walking With The Wounded.

Gareth was part of the Oscar-winning team behind The King’s Speech, working as producer on the British film.

Following the film’s release he attended the Academy Awards in Los Angeles.

Speaking to the Echo last month, he urged people to press their local cinema to show Kajaki.

On the film making its Dorset debut in Weymouth, he said: “I’m so happy that Kajaki: The True Story has found its way to my hometown.

“My journey as a filmmaker really started in Weymouth.

“It was the time spent studying at Weymouth College media department that gave me focus on what I wanted to do and prepared me for my later career.

“I’m hoping a good number of friends and family will be able to make it along to the screening I am hosting on Sunday, January 18.

“There will be a Q&A afterwards where people can quiz me on the film, my career and being back at home.”

And Gareth is set to pass on some of his film-making knowledge to current students at Weymouth College.

Kajaki is showing at Weymouth Cineworld on Sunday, January 18 at 4pm. It is also showing at the cinema on Sunday and Tuesday January 20.
