VISITORS to Age UK Dorchester were all shook up as the charity hosted an Elvis Day.

A wide range of people turned up at the charity’s centre in Prince of Wales Road to enjoy a display of Elvis memorabilia including records, movie posters and books as well as a slideshow of photographs and films of The King in action.

In the afternoon there was a screening of one of Elvis’s most popular films, Blue Hawaii, at the Evergreen Cinema.

Organiser Margaret Well-spring said that the charity regularly put on an Elvis film around this time of year to celebrate what would have been his birthday.

To mark the fact he would have been 80 this year, she decided to make a whole day of it and brought in her own collection of memorabilia to form the display.

Margaret said she was delighted with the turnout on the day and how everything went.

She said: “It went like clockwork and we had quite a few people coming along.”

Margaret said plenty of people attended the morning exhibition and then said they would come back to enjoy the film in the afternoon.

She said the whole idea of the event was to attract a wider audience than those who traditionally use the Age UK centre and to make more people aware of the services on offer.

Margaret said: “The whole idea of it is a chance to invite people in that have never come through these doors.

“Younger people are going to be the older people of tomorrow and they are going to need these services.

“If we can attract a different kind of audience that’s the main idea of it.”

Age UK Dorchester runs regular lunch and activity clubs as well as offering a range of other services in the community.

It also puts on screenings at its Evergreen Cinema which everyone is invited to come and enjoy.
