COUNCILLORS will consider a petition asking to extend the 30mph zone on the B3157 at Portesham.

A 50-strong petition calling for the 30mph speed limit to be extended west of the village to the West Elworth junction will be considered by Dorset County Council’s regulatory committee this Thursday.

The petition, organised by a working group approved by Chesil Bank Parish Council, claims that there is no safe access for people from Portesham using the playing field and allotment facilities at West Elworth.

It states: “This junction is a renowned accident black spot and by reducing the speeds to after the junction this will reduce the risk when leaving and entering the road.

“The recreation group have held two fetes at the playing field site now and it poses a risk when pedestrians walk along the verge and meet vehicles which are travelling at 50mph around the bend.”

A report going before the committee states the accident record for the last five years shows one serious and one slight accident at the junction.

The committee will decide if the petition should be taken forward. If it is, the request will be assessed and prioritised against other proposals for new speed limits if deemed appropriate and within the council’s criteria.
