A PHYSICAL training instructor who went to school in Weymouth has been com-mended for his RAF service.

Sergeant Rick Harrop, 34, a physical training and parachute jumping instructor at RAF Odiham, has been awarded the Chief of the Air Staff Commendation in recognition of his outstanding contribution to RAF Odiham and the wider community through sport and physical fitness.

Rick, who is a former pupil of Wey Valley School, joined the Royal Air Force in 2001 and since then has served at seven different units, as well in the Falkland Islands, the USA and Northern Island.

He said: “I was shocked to receive the award. It was a complete surprise.

“There are kids who live nearby who do not have access to sporting opportunities.

“I take great pride in helping them participate in sporting or fitness activities.”

While at RAF Odiham, Rick is responsible for the day-to-day running of the Physical Education Flight, delivering the fitness needs of the station and assisting sports teams and adventurous training endeavours.

Outside of work, he coaches the Alton Rugby Club and, through this, has organised and facilitated numerous visits to schools, including those of disadvantaged children within the local area.

Squadron Leader Draper, who is Sgt Harrop’s Officer in Command, commented: “Sgt Harrop’s infectious enthusiasm and leadership have had an exceptionally positive impact on RAF Odiham’s Physical Education Flight, resulting in improved morale across an operationally focused unit.

“His work in the local community has had untold benefits, with the rugby clubs making significant improvements as well as reaping a haul of trophies over recent seasons.

“As an excellent ambassador for his trade and the RAF, whose unswerving espirit de corps and loyalty is demonstrated on a daily basis, Sgt Harrop is an outstanding SNCO who is fully deserving of official recognition.”

Sgt Harrop will be awarded his Commendation at a special ceremony at RAF Northolt later this year.
