ORGANISERS behind the Purbeck Marathon have reminded runners places are now up for grabs in the 2015 event.

The race, that has been ranked in the UK’s top three marathons each year, quickly sold out in 2014, despite increasing the number of entries.

Race director Martyn Payne said: “The Purbeck Marathon is about showcasing the beauty of Purbeck while raising funds for local charities and good causes.

“Runners have noted the wonderful support on the course even though much of the route is in the countryside.”

An event spokeman explained the Purbeck Marathon bills itself as ‘more than just a marathon’. Runners completing the classic marathon distance of 26 miles and 385 yards will find they still have a short distance to run including a final hill up to Sandpit Field in Swanage.

“It is closer to 27 miles but well worth the extra effort,” said the spokesman In 2014 the Purbeck Marathon donated £6,000 to local community good causes - an achievement organisers are hoping to eclipse this year.

The race is organised completely by volunteers, with a committee working throughout the year to develop and improve the event.

The spokesman added: “It is more than just a marathon because of the unique places it passes on the route. Runners cross the MOD tank firing range and run through the deserted village of Tyneham.

“They cross the historic Swanage Railway on a foot crossing, skirt the iconic ruins of Corfe Castle and finish alongside the beach where the sea is a great way to relieve tired limbs.”

The race is scheduled for September 20.
