AN ELDERLY man was injured after being pulled to the ground by two Staffordshire Bull Terriers which also attacked his dogs.

Police today appealed for witnesses and anyone with information to come forward following the dog attack on Portland.

The owner of the Staffordshire Bull Terriers has yet to come forward and police have issued a description.

The attack happened when the victim, a 74-year-old-man from Weymouth was walking his three dogs – two Cockapoos and a Labradoodle – along Portland Marina during the afternoon.

The terriers attacked his two Cockapoos before their owner pulled them away.

Police said when the victim began to return to his car he saw the Staffordshire Bull Terriers running towards him again.

They attacked his dogs a second time before pulling him to the ground where he suffered minor injuries.

The Cockapoos suffered minor cuts and scratches, the Labradoodle was uninjured.

The owner of the two Staffordshire Bull Terriers is described as a white man, aged in his 30s, with short mousey curly hair and wearing glasses.

PC Dan Seall of Weymouth police said: “I would like to speak to the owner of the Staffordshire Bull Terriers and am appealing for anyone who may have been in the area during the incident or may know the identity of the dog owner described to contact me in confidence on 101.

“The majority of dog owners in Dorset are responsible, but I would remind the public that it is their responsibility to ensure they keep their pet under control.”

The incident happened between noon and 1pm last Thursday, February 5, although details were only released yesterday.

Weymouth and Portland Borough Council spokesman for Community Safety Cllr Mike Goodman, pictured left, said: “We are working with the police about this matter and would encourage anyone who may have information to get in contact with Dorset Police.”

Portland Town Councillor Rod Wild, left, who was a local dog warden for 10 years, said: “I feel very sorry for the elderly gentleman that was attacked.

“People must act responsibly and take charge of their dogs.

“I would hope that the dog owner comes forward and identifies himself.”

Witnesses and anyone with information should call Dorset Police in confidence on 101 quoting incident number 5:190.
