A SINGER who has worked with the likes of The Wanted and Conor Maynard delighted pupils at the Isle of Portland Aldridge Community Academy with a performance.

Devon born singer Rich Cottell was visiting the Academy to end their Safer Internet Week.

Staying safe online is a top very close to his heart so as well as performing for the pupils he spoke to them about this and cyber bullying.

Hailing from the rolling hills of Devon, Rich Cottell describes his sound as feel-good indie pop with a happy “life’s awesome” vibe.

“I’ve been playing music for as long as I can remember and love to write my own songs. I started my YouTube channel as I wanted people to hear my music, and it’s grown from there.”

Having sold 2,000 copies of his self-released EP “In The Now” in 2013, Rich has turned down talent scouts from some of television’s top talent shows to pursue the indie musician route. Inspired by the Jack Black film “School of Rock”, Rich started teaching music in primary schools throughout Devon to fund the recording of his first album.

“More Than Just A Geek” is due for release in Summer 2014. The album’s songs are about living for the moment and being happy.

“I’ve always wanted my songs to affect people and to make sure it’s in as positive a way as possible. Even the slow songs are written to be empowering.”

Academy director for change and innovation, Gary Spracklen , said: “There has been a lot of excitement around the Academy about Rich's visit. I am really surprised we were able to keep it a secret for so long.

Rich had everyone singing along to some great tracks today and came with strong message that spoke volumes to our learners.”

Safer Internet Week ran from Monday, February 9 to Friday, February 13 and saw pupils aged 3 to 19 considering how to use the internet safely.

Tips for staying safe online

1) Don’t post any personal information online – like your address, email address or mobile number.

2) Think carefully before posting pictures or videos of yourself. Once you’ve put a picture of yourself online most people can see it and may be able to download it, it’s not just yours anymore.

3) Keep your privacy settings as high as possible

4) Never give out your passwords

5) Don’t befriend people you don’t know

6) Don’t meet up with people you’ve met online. Speak to your parent or carer about people suggesting you do

7) Remember that not everyone online is who they say they are

8) Think carefully about what you say before you post something online

9) Respect other people’s views, even if you don’t agree with someone else’s views doesn’t mean you need to be rude

10) If you see something online that makes you feel uncomfortable, unsafe or worried: leave the website, turn off your computer if you want to and tell a trusted adult immediately.
