IT WAS a case of every little helps at a Portland supermarket when Molly Poole became an honorary staff member for the day.

Four-year-old Molly, who lives on Portland, was invited to Tesco, in Easton, for a behind-the-scenes look at the store’s bakery.

Molly, who is battling a brain tumour, was given special access following a chance meeting between her mother, Sam Tucker, and the store’s community champion Debbie Lindoe.

Debbie Lindoe said: “She (Sam) came in to see me to ask if we could display some HeadSmart symptom cards.

“I said, ‘Yes, that would be fine.’”

HeadSmart is a project which aims to increase awareness of brain tumours in children and young people.

Debbie said: “We just got talking. Molly was there and I introduced myself. She told me her favourite things were Tesco cookies.

“I thought it would just be a nice idea to organise a little trip into the bakery to see where the cookies are made and pick some of her favourites and bake them herself.”

Molly received a special baker’s hat and badge signifying she was a staff member.

Debbie said: “I just decorated a little bakery hat for her to wear. She can take it home and remember her trip. She gets to keep the badge as well.

“I think Molly is inspirational, I would say, and very brave. She’s very humble as well.”

During her visit, Molly helped bake a selection of her favourite cookies before sprinkling sugar on some chocolate doughballs.

Molly was diagnosed with a Medullobastoma brain tumour in 2013.

She has since undergone a 10-hour operation, five cycles of chemotherapy and eight weeks of radiotherapy.

A recent cranio-spinal MRI scan revealed Molly’s condition had stabilised with no change in the scan.

Molly’s mother, Sam, said her family had a good relationship with the store and were regular visitors.

She said: “Before Molly was diagnosed, it was part of her routine.

“Now that we’ve come home it is part of her activities (again). That little thing actually means a lot. It’s something she’s familiar with.

“It’s an event rather than a little add-on. She loves going around the store.”

Sam will be at Tesco on Friday (March 6) raising money and awareness as part of Bandana for Brain Tumours Day.

She’ll be at the store selling bandanas, pens and badges between 10am and 6pm.

Money raised will go towards Molly’s fundraising group, which is part of The Brain Tumour Charity.
