WEYMOUTH Football Club fans from the 1970s are hosting a reunion.

Organised by avid Terras fans Billy Short and Hazel Hardy, the get-together will be held at Weymouth Angling Society in Commercial Road next month.

It will see fans from the era reunite and reminisce about following The Terras.

The 1970s was a relatively successful decade for the club with legions of fans attending the games in Weymouth and travelling all around the country to see the team play.

The reunion has been called the Gasworks End reunion in honour of the old stand at the Recreation Ground where the most vociferous fans congregated.

However, the event is open to all fans who attended the games.

Mr Short, who still lives in Weymouth and follows the club, said the idea came from Hazel Hardy after she got back in touch with old friends on Facebook.

Eighty fans have already signed up to the reunion, which will take place on April 4.

Mr Short said he is looking forward to the night and to meet up with old friends.

Mr Short said: “Those who stood in the Gasworks end were like a skinhead gang, with their Doc Martens boots and they had their own chants and songs.

“I was on the other end of the scale really, I was like a hippy and used to stand in the terraces opposite them, but we all got on and after the games we all used to meet in the pub afterwards.

Mr Short said the reunion would bring back old memories of following the Terras and would bring back the ‘community feel’ of supporting a local football club.

He added: “We had some great memories, both watching Weymouth at home and going to watch them all over the country.

“In those days, it wasn’t as easy to get around as it is now, there were no supporters coaches and you had to make your own way there.

“ we had some great trips to places like Cardiff and Swansea.

“The game has certainly changed, on and off the field.

“It’s not so much a local team any more, in those days most of the lads that played for us were from Weymouth but now they’re from all over.

“But there does seem to be an upturn in fortunes at the moment for the club.

“they are doing well and there is a bit of momentum about the whole club at the moment, and I’m sure the reunion will be a great night.”
