THIS souvenir programme is from the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth.

It dates all the way back to May 12, 1937 and was produced to celebrate the occasion by the Borough of Weymouth and Melcombe Regis.

The area held four days of events to mark the historic occasion.

As well as photos of the Mayor and Mayoress of the borough Albert Biles and his wife, the programme contains a full colour replica of a portrait of their majesties the King and Queen.

On the Coronation Day, Wednesday, May 12, events in the borough included a thanksgiving service at the King’s statue, followed by a coronation procession and ceremony. In the afternoon there was a six-a-side football tournament and sailing races in the bay.

In the evening the radio broadcast from the King was played for the public at Alexandra Gardens and Sidney Hall before a night of dancing with the Rothwell Temperance Band and a schools pageant.

The night was capped off by a Grand Firework Display at the Stone Pier and the illumination of the Nothe and Esplanade.

Then on Thursday May 13 there was a school’s sports event and tea at the Esplanade, followed in the evening by an angling competition organised by Weymouth Angling Club and dancing into the night on the Pier.

Friday May 14 saw an afternoon of tea and entertainment for the borough’s over 65 year olds, followed by more dancing on the Esplanade and Pier into the evening.

Saturday May 15 saw a sports day for adults at the Recreation Ground including tug-o-war, musical chairs on bicycles and pillow fights.

The evening ended with more dancing on the Esplanade and Pier.
