WEYMOUTH couple Bill and Jean Legg celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary with a party attended by family and friends.

Mrs Legg, 80, said she met her husband, 82, while going on a double date: "My friend used to live next door and she saw my husband's cousin, so the four of us met up in Westham."

Speaking about their wedding day, Mrs Legg said: "We got married at St Mary's Church in Chickerell. There were about 60 people including Bill's aunties.

"I had a long, flowing, white dress which I borrowed and I had two bridesmaids - my sister and sister-in-law.

"My husband's brother-in-law was his best man. We organised our own reception party at the Victory Hall in Charlestown, which all the guests attended."

The pair, who have always lived in the Weymouth area, eventually settled in Chapelhay, where Gina worked as a cashier and Bill worked as a driver.

Mrs and Mrs Legg later had their four daughters Susan, Carole, Janet and Sarah and now have nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

The happy couple celebrated their milestone anniversary with a party at Beechview community centre, which was attended by about 60 people including extended family.

Their daughter Carole Fisher said Mr and Mrs Legg 'thoroughly enjoyed every moment of the party', and added the family hired an accordionist to play on the day to remind the couple of the musical entertainment at their original wedding reception.

As well as marking their anniversary, Mr and Mrs Legg are also celebrating Bill turning 82 on Sunday, so the pair are doubly jubilant.

Asked what their secret to long marriage was, Bill said: "Sticking together through sickness and in health is the most important thing. Everybody has their arguments, but we have been happy enough."
