ANarray of Scottish talent has been shortlisted for this year's Bafta television awards.

Denis Lawson, the Scots actor, is in the running for best actor for his role in the BBC's Bleak House, the Dickens adaptation which leads the nominations in four major categories.

Fellow Scottish actors Peter Capaldi, for The Thick Of It, and Ashley Jensen, for her role in Extras, have also been shortlisted for comedy acting awards, while Gordon Ramsay, the chef, is in line for a prize for his Kitchen Nightmares show. The BBC dominates this year's awards, with 47 of the 76 nominations in all categories, with ITV having only seven, Channel Four 20, and Five and Sky one each.

There is also a place on the shortlist for Noel Edmonds, the light entertainer who many critics thought had left the television screens for good.

He is in the running for a prize for best entertainment performance, his first Bafta nomination for his Channel Four quiz show Deal or No Deal.

Bleak House has been shortlisted for best drama, while both Gillian Anderson and Anna Maxwell Martin are nominated for best actress. It is up against three other BBC productions in the drama serial category: Fingersmith, Funland and To the Ends of the Earth.

The Thick of It, the political comedy, has three nominations, with the Catherine Tate Show and Extras receiving two each.

Two Channel Four dramas - The Queen's Sister, about the life of Princess Margaret, and The Government Inspector, which depicted the David Kelly affair - both have two nominations each.

Edmonds said the Bafta nomination was the highlight of his broadcasting career, a career which also saw the invention of Mr Blobby.

"Frankly I am astonished and excited in equal measure by this Bafta nomination, " he said.

"Let's not forget that Deal Or No Deal is barely six months old and the format is still evolving.

"We currently have the most demanding work schedule in television, filming over six hours per day for 10 days and producing in each session five weeks of shows.

The bearded 57-year-old will compete with Jeremy Clarkson for Top Gear, Jonathan Ross for Friday Night With Jonathan Ross and Jack Dee for Jack Dee Live At The Apollo in the entertainment category.

Inthe best features category, Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares is up against The Apprentice, Dragon's Den and Top Gear.

The awards will be broadcast on ITV1 and the winners announced on May 7 at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London at a ceremony hosted by Davina McCall.
